Roll Vase
I was inspired to create this vase because of a story I heard regarding the Eames’ admiration for flowers. The story recalls a dinner party the Eames hosted. At the end of their dinner, after dishes were taken away, each guest was presented with a small bouquet of flowers to “digest with your eyes.”
Personal project
The story stuck with me, mostly because my mom was a fantastic gardener and I was fortunate enough to grow up with fresh cut flowers. This got me thinking of flower arrangements and how static I remembered them. It struck me as a little sad that most vases typically presented only one angle of a bouquet, with the other side unseen. I wanted to challenge this by making a vase that you could interact with, and easily change the view.
Roll combines physical interaction and appreciation of floral arrangements in a playful glass vase tabletop spinner. The rounded, weighted base with excess glass allows the vase to animate a floral creation. The design aimed to encourage people to touch and rotate the vase, so a different floral could be unveiled with each turn.
The vase encourages interaction while preventing water leaking out. the natural process to make the orifices in which to place the flower creates a soft lip. If water reaches this high while rolling, it’s naturally splashed back, preventing a mess.
A flat surface underneath the body stands the vase upright.
